Democracy in Dissent: Pop Culture and Politics in a Polarized U.S.

Bürgeruniversität Haus der Universität

PD Dr. Martin Lüthe, Research Associate, John F. Kennedy Institute, Freie Universität Berlin

Moderation: Dr. Svenja Engelmann-Kewitz, HHU

Bad Bunny's 2026 Super Bowl performance sparked a national debate over U.S. American national identity and the history of American democracy. Popular culture has long played an important role in shaping U.S. politics as well as public protests — reflecting both conservative and progressive imaginaries. It has mobilized voices in increasingly polarized political debates through mass media spectacles and viral social media. In this public discussion event, experts and students from American Studies will discuss how popular culture has served as a vehicle for different political movements, both historically and in relation to the heated political climate in 2026 with its upcoming 250-year celebration of the Declaration of Independence.
