Latin lovers in distress: The trouble with manliness in a few Fellini's movies
Prof. Dr. Laurent Jullier (Universit  de la Lorraine)

Everybody has heard of La Dolce Vita, but life is not so "dolce" (sweet) than the famous image of Marcello and Anita in Rome by night could suggest. Especially for males. Marcello is far from being the happiest and the quietest person in the world. And it goes this way in most of Fellini's movies : men aren't totally happy with what is nowadays called their gender role. Through a few number of movies (I Vitelloni, La Dolce vita, Le notti di Cabiria, Le tentazioni del dottor Antonio, Casanova di Federico Fellini and La citt  delle donne) we will explore, through the analyze of Fellini's mise en sc ne and editing, what's wrong with these "never totally satisfied" latin lovers wearing sunglasses even at night.

Born in 1960 in a working-class region in the East of France, Laurent Jullier is director of research at the Institut de Recherches sur le Cin ma et l Audiovisuel (IRCAV) at the university of Sorbonne Nouvelle (Paris III) and professor of film studies at the Institut Europ en de Cin ma et d Audiovisuel (IECA) at the university of Lorraine. Cinephile since his younger days, but not in the way the french institution of cinephilia understand the word, he kept his liking for popular films that he s glad to take as object of study. His usual method mixes psychology, sociology, ethics and film analysis : see essays on www.academia.edu.
