Queerying Japan: Transnational Perspectives on Politics, Society and Culture (International Conference)
Scholars from Japan, Germany, Australia and Canada
Each individual belongs to multiple social groups at the same time. How do gender and sexuality shape these social relations, and how do they determine people’s opportunities in life? We will discuss these broad questions in the case of contemporary Japan through the lens of gender and queerness, and along the intersections of socio-economics, politics and culture. Our aim is to shed new light on sexual politics as shaping the conditions that sustain or hinder human creativity, well-being and survival. This international symposium brings together scholars from Japan, Germany, Australia and Canada to discuss queer life chances in contemporary Japan, while also providing transnational and comparative German, European, and Asia-Pacific perspectives.
